"seattle art museum's "target practice" is a fascinating attack on painting"
The Seattle Times (July 26th 2009): "Yoko Ono's 1961 piece "Painting to Hammer a Nail" not only plays with notions of what a painting is, but also with what constitutes a creative act and a work of art. Beginning as a blank canvas on the wall, hung next to a hammer and a box of nails, Ono's "painting" invites museum goers to hammer nails into the canvas, thereby constructing, augmenting, or destroying the canvas throughout the exhibition. Ono is sidestepping the concept of the artist as the sole creator and questioning the importance of permanent, physical properties of a work of art; prior to the exhibition, the work of art existed as a concept, not as a tangible thing — Darling simply asked Ono for permission to present it."

allen klein dies
The Telegraph (July 5th 2009): "Having initially been rebuffed by the Beatles, Klein eventually won the approval of John Lennon, whom he secretly met at the Dorchester in London in January 1969, having carefully boned up on the singer’s career and beliefs. Lennon was flattered: “He not only knew my work, and the lyrics that I had written, but he also understood them, and from way back. That was it,” he recalled."
yoko ono wins rights to john lennon footage
AFP (July 1st 2009): "The lawsuit dated back to last year, when World Wide Video, a consortium of collectors of Beatles memorabilia based in Massachusetts, filed a lawsuit against Ono for blocking a screening of a two-hour documentary it produced culling the rare footage. The company had planned to show the film, titled "3 Days in the Life," in 2007, billing it as "a most intimate and no-holds-barred" look at Lennon's private life with his family and friends. On the tapes, Lennon, who died in 1980, is also seen joking about lacing former president Richard Nixon's tea with the hallucinogenic drug LSD and composing songs like his own "Remember" and the Beatles' "Mind Games." World Wide Video claimed it had bought the rights to the footage from Ono's previous husband, Anthony Cox, in 1970."
"A federal court in the northeastern city of Boston, Massachusetts last week ruled that Yoko Ono was the rightful copyright holder, according to her lawyer Jonathan Albano."
john lennon's liverpool-bought guitar sells for £205,000
Liverpool Daily Post (July 3rd 2009): "The 1958 Hofner Senator guitar, bought by Lennon in the early sixties before he became famous, had been expected to reach bids of £100,000 to £150,000 because so few come on the market. The Beatle bought the guitar from Hessy's Music store, in Liverpool, and auctioneers believe he kept it at home for song-writing purposes. He later gave it to friend and Beatles’ road manager Mal Evans, also from the city. "
john lennon and the film called self portrait
The Observer (July 5th 2009): "... took me back 40 years to a press screening of two minimalist movies by Yoko Ono at a smart private cinema in Mayfair. One film had the camera simply staring at Lennon's penis. Lasting some 40 minutes (it seemed like an eternity), it focused upon the unaided tumescence and detumescence of his member, reaching some sort of climax with a pearl-like drop of semen. The film, then jocularly known as "John Lennon's John Thomas" is actually called Self Portrait. The item listed in Yoko's filmography as Erection is in fact about John watching a hotel being built."

yoko ono about michael jackson
Undercover (July 1st 2009): "With his enormous talent, Michael kept giving us power, inspiration and joy. Yet he knew that the world was not kind to him for many reasons, some of it going right back to racism. That must have been so hard for him. His various attempts to be loved by the world equaled the pain he received from it."
a toast to NYC (or, what yoko ono taught me about new york)
The Huffington Post (June 29th 2009): "I once hung up after a conversation with Yoko Ono after she mentioned dancing down the streets of Manhattan every day, not in her mind, but actually twirling. I initially had laughed, but then I thought about it for a while and came up with endless situations where I did the same - following a troupe of friends dressed as gypsies down Canal (true), at 4 am after 80's night at Don Hills, in Central Park, and as a little girl, leaving school on the Upper East Side in a patterned blue dress and red shoes and pigtails, like a mini-Dorothy. And then many other times, just because..."

yoko ono wins lifetime mojo prize
BBC News (June 11th 2009): "Mojo chief editor Phil Alexander, who hosted the event, praised Ono, 76, as "a huge influence on modern music". "She may have been married to one of the most famous men in the world, but she also helped change music as we know it in her own right," he added. "First, by introducing avant-garde sensibilities to her husband but, just as significantly, by continuing to push the boundaries of what was deemed the norm way after that."
