Yoko Ono's Birthday Thoughts 2008 and party photos

Hi Yoko,

I do not have the words to express how I feel.

So I borrowed some from Bob Dylan:-

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

Long May You Run,

Love,
Gerry O'Neill

Happy birthday Yoko!

You are the most inspiring artist I know. I admire your mind, your heart, your strength and belief in human being. I’m the young woman from the middle of Europe, from Poland, but I know a lot of your works and some of very important words and things you’ve said and done. And all of these things are magical and very real at the same time. Woman with so strong personality, from another part of the world brings people from the other side of our beautiful planet great wisdom. Love and peace - not only for the “other” but also for us.

Thank you for everything! You’re a very beautiful woman, person, artist, witch... Happy birthday!

Dear Yoko,

Happy Birthday! Seventy-five is considered a milestone birthday in American society, but somehow for you it is just a number. Thank you for spending your 75 years freeing all of us from our restrictive notions of age, art, beauty, celebrity, love, peace - to name just a few. I will be 50 this year, and I still remember how happy I was as a young girl in Texas to find out that John Lennon, my most adored person in the world, had fallen madly in love - not with a supermodel or movie star, but with a petite Japanese artist who was obviously independent and powerful, both unabashedly feminist and feminine - a perfect role model. And the world had to take notice of you both - which you turned to a powerful message for good. The music, the art, the work for peace and the notion of a world without borders - how can we thank you for it all? Above all, thank you and bless you for your wisdom - your consistently positive and hopeful messages about life inspire me, and now also my teenage daughter. Happy Birthday, and many more!

Love,

Bonnie from Chevy Chase, MD

You are a Strong Woman I really look up to you. All you have been through and you are as Tuff as Nails. Go You.

Dear Yoko,

I was reading the liner notes on Blueprint For A Sunrise yesterday where you said the need to talk about women had not been resolved in the 1970s. You still hear women’s screams in the night. This reminded me of a speech a lecturer gave in a Sculpture and Installation Prize I was in. One work I entered into said Prize was an instruction piece which asked people to respond via SMS to the question “Sometimes I don’t know why I bother trying to be an artist. Why shouldn’t I give up and become a housewife instead?” In the speech she gave before announcing the winner, this lecturer claimed that it was interesting my work should come up now, because she believed “all of this had been sorted out in the 70s”. It is clear that Feminism did SOMETHING for women, but not EVERYTHING. I still hear women’s screams too, Yoko. Sometimes I hear my own.

One night, wearing a white t-shirt bearing your name in big, black letters, I was walking to my friend Celeste’s exhibition, when someone asked if I’d seen a video of yours in the University library. I said “No, but I’ll be sure to borrow it,” while the woman kept talking; “Yeah, Yoko’s really fat and old and boring in this video and her work is shit.”
“What?”
“In this video she’s old, fat, boring and shit.”
“…Well…” I couldn’t manage to construct a sentence upon hearing this blasphemy. But, eventually, I spoke: “Well, Yoko has inspired so many people all over the world, so if that makes her shit, I want to be shit like her.”
I then proceeded to high-five my friend Tamzin and crossed the road.

If you’re shit, I want to be shit like you.

You inspire me to raise my voice.

Why is work that draws attention to OUR reality, women’s reality, women’s pain, women’s anguish—why is that SHIT? I have a right to speak. You have a right to speak. As long as I still have something to say, I will speak. And the ones I am speaking to… Well, they can turn their heads the other way—But I will still speak.
(Is this what we do to our women?)

What more can I say? I love you.
I love you, I love you, I love you.
Happy 75th Birthday Yoko.

Amira

I have been studying your work for the past few months in preparation
for a presentation at Monday Club* and I think I finally understand
what you have been doing all these years. Thank you for opening my
eyes, and ears, and mind to the idea of creating "art' and "life"
through Happenings as well as the choices we make throughout life.
Your Pieces read like poetry and your art can make the soul sing. May
all our work for PEACE succeed.

Thank you and Happy Birthday,

Susan

* Monday Club is a group that started as part of the 19th century
women's self-enlightenment movement. My group is 113 years old. At our
meetings we take turns presenting our own research on our choice of
topics within a group-chosen general theme. I chose to study you.

Hi my dear Yoko!!!!

Until this very strange and special day in december 1980 I was listening to the songs and music that you and John made, with great love and interest. Obviously it was not just the music, it was your whole idea of manifestation. I felt you were very dear to me, like my best friends. But for many years after this day, I found it hard to listen to this music, because there was such a strong link to sadness. It was difficult times for many people, I know.

Time is the unknown. Maybe also a healer. But this type of healing will be based on forgetting. It must be endless oceans of forgotten thoughts somewhere. Mind games. John was older than me, but now I'm older than he ever got the chance to be in his physical body. Funny as it is: these days I feel joy has returned, and I can again listen to your music and recognize the great power and beauty it contains. In every way I feel you have been very generous and open to the world. Your work and presence has great meaning, and I wish to tell you this. Thank you!

Happy birthday Yoko!

Dear Yoko,

I am so happy you were born!

I, too, am an Aquarian. That we share this is terrific. I have been
told it is the sign of the frustrated genius but I know better!

I saw you perform in Los Angeles at Arthurfest a couple of years ago
and I absolutely loved it! My Onochord sent the message of I LOVE
YOU many times until its battery was no more. Sometimes I send the
message with my car headlights now!

Please find attached my tribute to you - a recording of LISTEN, THE
SNOW IS FALLING that I made with my band NIGHT PEOPLE. I sincerely
hope you enjoy it.

I love your spirit, Yoko!

I am so pleased you were born!

Love,
Matthew

hello yoko!
i posted this on my myspace today:
"today marks the 75th birthday of my life's inspiration and hero, yoko ono. she has produced some of the most mind-expanding art ever created. she defies gender, race and age. she leaves an atmosphere of peace and positivity in all that she does. she carries her joy on her left and her pain on her right, to paraphrase another female dynamo. her artworks and her writings will take you down warm corridors in your head you never knew were there. her music is spine-tingling, clit-tickling, raw and undiluted. it is whatever she wants to be, whatever mood she's in. she is woman. she is ono. she is 75 today."
happy birthday!
continue to inspire us and fill us with light

I can't thank you enough for being with me for such a long time: ca. 25 of
my 40 years. Yes, I really can't. I don't have enough words to tell you.
But, I am sure, you will feel it. Well, this is the next thing, I am
grateful for.

Have a nice Birthday, dear Yoko!

Dear Yoko Ono,

guess, this is one of a few million "happy birthday"-wishes to yot today...
Nevertheless I would like to wish you all the best with this Irish Prayer:

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

May the saddest day of your future be no worse
Than the happiest day of your past.

May the roof above us never fall in.
And may the friends gathered below it never fall out.

May you have warm words on a cold evening,
A full moon on a dark night,
And the road downhill all the way to your door.

Kindest regards,
Haluk Peters
from Heidelberg/Germany
